A native of Sayville, NY, Douglas Jones comes from a family of music educators and professional performers. Mr. Jones completed his early studies at the Juilliard School’s Pre-College Program, performing with the Honors Scholarship Brass Quintet for three years. Douglas received his Bachelor of Music in Tuba Performance from the Cleveland Institute of Music and a Master of Music in Tuba performance from the New England Conservatory of Music. Former teachers include Ronald Bishop, Yasuhito Sugiyama, and Mike Roylance.
Before moving to Saint Paul, Minnesota, Mr. Jones held a tuba position with the United States Air Force Heritage of America Band. Notable performances in Jones’ Air Force career include; the 2017 Rose Bowl parade, the 2017 Presidential Inauguration, featured soloist with the concert band, and over fifteen military funerals with the USAF ceremonial brass in Arlington National Cemetery. In addition to his performance duties, Douglas was the Music Director of Heritage Brass, leading the ensemble on various tours throughout the United States.
An avid chamber musician, Jones has performed with various new music ensembles including the Cleveland-based Five-One ensemble. Jones is a founding member of the Kyōdai Brass Quintet, a group started in Cleveland with his two brothers. Praised for their innovative and engaging programs, Kyōdai’s most recent activity includes residencies with the Detroit Chamber Music Society and the Cleveland Chamber Music Society. They were awarded both the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival and Aspen Music Festival Brass Quintet Fellowships.
Since moving to the Twin Cities in 2021, Douglas has worked in various roles as a music educator in the South Washington County Schools. Mr. Jones is the co-director of bands at both Oltman and Cottage Grove Middle schools. Additionally, he directed the jazz bands at both schools and was the assistant director of the Woodbury High School Marching band for three seasons. Mr. Jones maintains an active private low brass studio in the twin cities and is an adjunct low brass instructor at the Culver Academy.
